March is an exciting month for us at BCB, celebrating Women’s History Month. Every year we mark International Women’s Day, 8 March, with Radio Venus – 24 hours of Women’s broadcasting. It’s a great opportunity for new women to get involved in BCB, with a fabulous selection of programmes produced and presented by Bradford’s finest! Building on our Women and Music initiative, we’ve been holding Radio Venus training workshops every week leading up to IWD, and many women will be presenting their very first radio programmes. We think this is our 26th (or 27th) year of Radio Venus – and some of us were even there at the Birth! If you’re not able to tune in on the 8th, or have missed any of the programmes, you can find them on Listen Again. We’ll also be repeating the programmes throughout March too.

We’ve had great fun over the last few weeks hosting the Bradford IWD team meetings at BCB as they plan the big City Hall IWD event. And as part of the March celebrations, we are also working with Bradford Council, Linking Network, Bradford College and the University to partner with the WOW (Women of the World) team when they bring the WOW bus to Bradford. The Venus team will be on the bus, recording Bradford women and girls as part of the WOW activities. You’ll be able to hear those recordings throughout March. So – listen up!

We’re all gearing up for Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture, and BCB will be there at ‘The Countdown Begins’ event at Bradford City. We’re also proud to be celebrating with Bradford and District Credit Union at their Civic Reception in City Hall. You’ll also find BCB out and about at community events across the Bradford District.
And phew….! After a lot of hard work from the BCB Premises Team, and incorporating all the great suggestions from BCB Volunteers, we are delighted to say that we have just signed off on the final design for the new BCB studios at Kala Sangam ( renamed Bradford Arts Centre). The major redevelopment work at KS is starting imminently, and we plan to move into the spanking new BCB space in Summer 2025 when it’s completed. Exciting times ahead.

As well as our ongoing schools and Youth Voice work, journalism students from Trinty University will be presenting programmes with us this month, and we’re welcoming young people from Oakbank school to record podcasts and scripts.

BCB’s Youth Music worker, Dipak Mistry, has been doing great work leading the Youth Music project. But there’s still time to get involved. If you are aged 12- 25, passionate about music and / or radio, there are lots of workshops/ training sessions/ opportunities for you to develop your skills and experience. Just get in contact with Dipak – he’d love to hear from you. dipak.mistry@bcbradio.co.uk

And finally, we mark the start of the holy month of Ramadan and its great significance for the Muslim community in Bradford.

Track of the Week

BCB’s Youth Music project aims to showcase music created by young people from around the district. So each week we’re featuring a track by a local artist on our About Bradford and Bradford & Beyond shows.

Making a Difference

As a part of a recent exhibition at the Science and Media Museum, our BCB volunteers were invited to talk about their lives and the various ways BCB has played a part in them.

Battenberg

Battenburg are Richard Sara and Owen Whitehouse.

The show derives it's name from the 4 squares that make up a slice of Battenberg. A square is a topic of conversation and Richard and Owen each bring 2 squares - 'blind baked' which means that neither knows what the others square is prior to the show.

The show is a one hour conversation interspersed with music which introduces the topics.Listen Live
