About Rob

Rob co-founded BCB with Mary Dowson, back when the hills were young and it were all flat caps an chappatis round 'ere. It was known as Bradford Festival Radio then, and thanks to the generosity of Dusty Rhodes we got started. Now he takes photos, puts little silver discs in drawers, mumbles into microphones, and walks on the hills. Keep On Blowin..

I like reggae, as regular listeners know well.
Especially the great Jamaican producers and artists recording from the 1960s to the 1980s.
Misty In Roots may be the only non-Jamaican band to ring my bell, and they’re on in Leeds this autumn!
Saturday 8 October at the Wardrobe.

Another track from Sufis At The Cinema – this week’s it’s Lata Mangeshkar & Shamsahd Begum, with Teri Mehfil Mein Kismat Azmakar. Our friendly Bollywood expert Irna Qureshi – http://bollywoodinbritain.wordpress.com – says:

“This is an ace qawali from Mughal e Azam – www.youtube.com/watch?v=TC7LyI1GVYw – and the first time I’ve watched this song clip in colour actually. Not sure I like it better than the b&w that I’m used to seeing. When this film was made in 1960, it featured the top actors of the day and was the most expensive film ever made at that time. It was all made in b&w apart from a mujra dance performance which was in full technicolor.

I love the qawali above because it’s performed by women. They’re actually having a poetry competition. The prince has asked two teams to debate the sacrifices that love is worthy of, so the women are doing this to music. I love the way they hand back to each other with their hand gestures. And the uniformed chorus girls. Lovely.”
