There are music blogs galore, but The Old Weird America is different.

http://oldweirdamerica.wordpress.com/

It focuses on the seminal Harry Smith’s Anthology of American Folk Music (HSAOAFM), put together by eccentric polymath Harry Smith and released in 1952, that influenced a whole generation of artists and musicians. Originally a three volume set on six LPs, it’s now available on CD, with the unreleased fourth volume on Revenant Records www.revenantrecords.com/index.php?section=releases&cd_ident=4

The Old Weird America blog looks at each tune on HSAOAFM in depth, and makes available downloadable compilations that throw more light on the tunes, the musicians and, in the process, America.

The latest post is on Blind Willie Johnson, whose Dark Was The Night was included on the Voyager Spacecraft Interstellar Mission, which has now left our Solar System http://oldweirdamerica.wordpress.com/2011/03/18/52-john-the-revelator-by-blind-willie-johnson

For the full Voyager list go to http://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/spacecraft/music.html

Gadaya, who produces the The Old Weird America, almost gave up on this marathon undertaking a year back. Support him – read the blog, get the downloads and give him feedback. I can’t wait for the post on Richard ‘Rabbit’ Brown and his wonderful James Alley Blues.

Here’s a wonderful short film that Grumpy and I have replayed endlessly – the singers are Baloji (the tall one) and Royce Mbumba (he’s the one with the golden voice – more info please!). Independence cah cha!

About Rob

Rob co-founded BCB with Mary Dowson, back when the hills were young and it were all flat caps an chappatis round 'ere. It was known as Bradford Festival Radio then, and thanks to the generosity of Dusty Rhodes we got started. Now he takes photos, puts little silver discs in drawers, mumbles into microphones, and walks on the hills. Keep On Blowin..
