Selection Box shows 111 & 112

Blimey, doesn’t time fly.  No sooner have you whacked up the playlist from one show than you find you’ve two others to catch up on.

For the show on 2 November, Laura Rawlings from The BCB Sessions bobbed in for a chat and reignited the flame of our occasional feature Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed & Something Blues.  I’m very glad to say that the ever-dependable Laura took to the task with appropriate gusto, and linked her selection of tracks to match the categories with magnificent tenuocitude.  Bat For Lashes’ What’s A Girl To Do for the “Old” link was a particular favourite, as it is from the album Fur & Gold. Eat your heart out Steve Wright, that’s quality radio items your moustached fisog could only dream of.

and also I can’t imagine Elton John doing an album of Nick Drake covers – particularly as early as 1970, as I thought Nick Drake had only had one album by that point.

Indeed 1970 does sound early, but all the information I have on this suggests it is right. It seems that gleaning knowledge on the subject is not easy – indeed if you Google “Elton John Saturday Sun Sessions” my blog above appears on the first page of results.

However, claiming that it is a “collection of covers of songs by Nick Drake” is a bit of a lazy misnomer on my part, as only four of the eleven tracks recorded for the sesson are by Nick Drake – Saturday Sun, Way To Blue, The Day Is Done and Time Has Told Me. The others tracks are songs penned by John Martyn, Beverley Martyn, Mike Heron (the folk singer not the former Marine who is set to marry Kate Silverton off of BBC Breakfast) and Ed Carter. The last four tracks of the album feature Linda Peters – latterly Linda Thompson – on lead vocals.

Elton John played the piano on “Back Home” by the England World Cup Squad in 1970. He’s also on He Ain’t Heavy He’s My Brother by the Hollies – none of which is strictly relevant but who else am I going to share these things with ?
