Buffet #75 – The one where we missed six f-bombs

Funny story. Because we broadcast between 7-8pm we have to watch our language. The occasional small swear (a ‘shit’, for example) is acceptable , but ‘f***s’ and other swears are not, so we always fuzzy them up when there’s a record we really want to play. This means you know they’re there, but the sensibilities of the young and easily offended are somewhat protected.

However, for this week’s show, having already bleeped a track by Afghan Whigs and another by Sufjan Stevens (who hardly ever bloody swears) we somehow let six f-bombs through. SIX! And when I say somehow, what I actually mean is Boris didn’t notice them despite previewing the track several times. When I listened back later and heard the sweet soprano of FKA Twigs unleash a string of dirty f-bombs and, what’s more, in the context of singing about very graphic sex, I had no choice but to alert BCB and ask for guidance. Thank you to lovely Mary Dowson, Head Honcho and Goddess of Wonderfulness for stepping in. She took a decision to cut the track and stuck a lovely bit of Stevie Wonder on at the end (thankfully not Ebony and Ivory).

So, if you’re here to listen back to Buffet and want the sanitised version, you can listen here

But if you want to hear FKA Twigs mimicking early Prince, but without the humour (ie. singing about sex in a high-pitched voice and saying ‘Motherf***er’ a few times) you can listen to the show here

And here’s our full track list:

1. Courtney Barnett – Pedestrian at Best
2. Viet Cong – Bunker Buster
3. Bjork – Stonemilker
4. Novelist x Mumdance – 1 Sec
5. Afghan Whigs – Be Sweet
6. Ibeyi – Ghosts
7. Gruff Rhys – Liberty (Is Where We’ll Be)
8. FKA Twigs – Two Weeks (only on Mixcloud)
9. Tanya Tagaq – Uja
10. Thee Oh Sees – The Dream
11. Sufjan Stevens – No Shade In the Shadow of the Cross
12. Nadine Shah – Fool
13. Bassekou Kouyate and Ngoni Ba – Siran Fen
14. Stevie Wonder – Superstition (only on BCB listen again link)

Please join us for more japes on 22nd March! Or in the meantime follow us on Twitter and Facebook.

Cheers! x

X_flyerRC1 copyChristmas Record Club
Saturday 6th December 8pm-11pm

Then on 6th December we’re hosting The Record Club at the Kirkgate Centre in Shipley. The theme is, of course, Christmas and we’ll be playing three full LPs by Andrew Jackson Jihad, Phil Spector and Sufjan Stevens. There’ll also be a little time to play your own Christmas records in between, plus there’s a Pop Quiz (and who doesn’t love a music quiz, eh?). To get you in the mood you can check out the playlist we’ve put together – you’ll notice it’s not typical of the Xmas music that gets pumped into our earholes every time we go shopping. And check out full details of the event on the Record Club website.

One more thing… Boris is reported to be doing well after his accident, and there’s still time to make a small donation to Keswick Mountain Rescue who saved him. This fundraising effort by Ewan Mitchell has exceeded £1000, which is just awesome. Massive snogs to everyone who’s donated!

We hope to see you at the disco and/or Record Club!

Buffet on Fantasy Festivals (show #51)

Now then!

Last week we broadcast a Fantasy Festival special, cos it’s quite fitting at this time of year. Some people are off to Latitude tomorrow (including Jenny Jet), and I am very jealous indeed (although you would have to pay me a lot of money to endure Texas).

Anyroad, you can probably guess that our show explored who would be in our fantasy line-ups. Certainly no re-formed bands, we’ve gone for people in their prime! Thank you to everyone who sent their own suggestions, including Jenny Wilson, Cheryl Killey, Anke Holgersson and Nanette Brimble. Elvis, George Formby, Kirsty MaColl… all good suggestions, and eclectic, which is how we like it.

Here’s the small selection we squeezed into the show:

1. ELLA FITZGERALD – Can’t Buy Me Love
2. SONIC YOUTH – Sugar Cane
3. VIOLENT FEMMES – Prove My Love
4. AC/DC – Back in Black
5. PUSSY RIOT – Putin Lights the Fires
6. GLEN CAMPBELL – Wichita Lineman
7. PRINCE AND THE REVOLUTION – Life Can Be So Nice
8. SUPER FURRY ANIMALS – The International Language of Screaming
9. DESTINY’S CHILD – Bootylicious
10. COCTEAU TWINS – Bluebell Knoll
11. DEATH FROM ABOVE 1979 – Going Steady
12. KRAFTWERK – Tour De France
13. THE SMITHS – William, It Was Really Nothing
14. THE TEMPTATIONS – Ball of Confusion

And there’s a bit of Mike Sammes Singers and Herb Alpert in there somewhere.

If you listened/listen to the show, you’ll know I laboured over my line-up, and even now keep thinking of bands I missed, but here’s what I came up with (in order of appearance):

Friday

Swell Maps
Dirty Projectors
Duchess Says
Violent Femmes
The Knife
Husker Du
Pixies
Super Furry Animals
LCD Soundsystem
Sufjan Stevens

Saturday

We Rock Like Girls Don’t

Sunday

The Kinks
Hern Alpert and the Tijuana Brass

Prince and the Revolution

Feel free to add you own line-ups, and don’t forget your sunscreen!

A Nightmare Before Christmas

When Jenny Jet and I ventured to Pontins to experience Shellac’s Nightmare Before Christmas (an All tomorrow’s Parties festival) we did not anticipate that Pontins itself would be a real nightmare. So much so it actually makes Butlins look classy. Anyroad, we are rocking middle aged Mums and enjoyed a fabtastic weekend of rock and roll despite the severely lacking facilities, accommodation and blood stained duvets.

This month’s Buffet (broadcast on 1st December) was a combination of ATP tribute and twisted Christmas tunes, for it is that time of year. You can listen to the show here

And this is what we played:

1. Theme from Ski Sunday
2. RED FANG – Number 13
3. WIRE – Ex Lion Tamer
4. GRUFF RHYS – Slashed Wrists This Christmas
5. NINA NASTASIA – Ugly Face
6. GAY WITCH ABORTION – Prison Charm
7. MELT BANANA – White Christmas
8. SUFJAN STEVENS – Christmas Woman
9. PRINZHORN DANCE SCHOOL – You are The Space Invader
10. MONO – Follow The Map
11. MY BLOODY VALENTINE – Map Ref 41 North 93 West
12. SHANNON WRIGHT – With Closed Eyes
13. BONNIE PRINCE BILLY with DAWN McCARTHY- Christmas Eve Can Kill You
14.  MISSON OF BURMA – Second Television
15. TEITUR – Happy Christmas (War Is Over)

We’re back on 29th December.

Stay warm!

Buffet #23

THE SCARAMANGA SIX – Last Roll of the Dice
PARTS AND LABOR – Rest
