Gil Scott-Heron - Im New Here

Gil Scott-Heron - I"m New Here

The new album by Gil Scott-Heron came as something of a surprise to me, but what a wonderful surprise it was! Although I don’t make a habit of having a ‘featured album’, I’m New Here was this week’s featured album.

I’m not sure if you heard Joel White’s Too Much Too Young earlier in the day, but he played the new single by Oh No Ono.  Some bands don’t make a video for singles, but ONO have made three for their new one, and are asking you the fan to vote for your favourite:

This is what I played in Eclectic Mainline last night:

Vampire Weekend – Giving Up The Gun
Gil Scott-Heron – On Coming From A Broken Home (Part 1)
Fionn Regan – House Detective
Danny & The Champions Of The World – Henry The Van
Gonjasufi – Candylane
Gil Scott-Heron – Parents (interlude)
Local Natives – Airplanes
Yeasayer – The Children
Gil Scott-Heron – Me And The Devil
Nick Cave & Warren Ellis – The Church (from The Road OST)
Frightened Rabbit – Nothing Like You
Juice Aleem – Rock My Hologram (Si Begg’s Pleasure Principle mix)
Gil Scott-Heron – Being Blessed (interlude)
Eels – A line in the dirt
Liars – Scissor
Gil Scott-Heron – I’ve Been Me (interlude)
Gil Scott-Heron – On Coming From A Broken Home (Part 2)
Dum Dum Girls – Jail La La
Thomas White – The Last Blast

You are as usual correct , the GSH LP is a bit of a belter – better than we had any right to expect considering his past problems – go back and get all the old stuff, if you havent already particularly “Small Talk at 125th and Lennox”

I haven’t got any previous GSH – in fact I’m ashamed to say the only tune I know is the one in which I believe he expresses sadness that The Beatles never performed Revolution on The Ed Sullivan Show.

I always liked “Whitey on The Moon ” his response to the moon landing (which we all know were faked anyway)

A rat done bit my sister Nell.
    (with Whitey on the moon)
Her face and arms began to swell.
    (and Whitey’s on the moon)
I can’t pay no doctor bill.
    (but Whitey’s on the moon)
Ten years from now I’ll be payin’ still.
    (while Whitey’s on the moon)
The man jus’ upped my rent las’ night.
    (’cause Whitey’s on the moon)
No hot water, no toilets, no lights.
    (but Whitey’s on the moon)
I wonder why he’s uppi’ me?
    (’cause Whitey’s on the moon?)
I wuz already payin’ ‘im fifty a week.
    (with Whitey on the moon)
Taxes takin’ my whole damn check,
Junkies makin’ me a nervous wreck,
The price of food is goin’ up,
An’ as if all that shit wuzn’t enough:
A rat done bit my sister Nell.
    (with Whitey on the moon)
Her face an’ arm began to swell.
    (but Whitey’s on the moon)
Was all that money I made las’ year
    (for Whitey on the moon?)
How come there ain’t no money here?
    (Hmm! Whitey’s on the moon)
Y’know I jus’ ’bout had my fill
    (of Whitey on the moon)
I think I’ll sen’ these doctor bills,
    Airmail special
    (to Whitey on the moon)
