Buffet #63 – Bobby is Back!

Hello hello!

If you tuned in to Buffet on Sunday 18th May – thanks! If you’re here to have a listen – click this bit!

Emma 2Emma made a triumphant return, which was marvellous, as she can only pop in sporadically to share her ace musical choices. And she really served up a treat with our Bastardised Beatles track of the month. Goodbye Beatles is a very special tribute album! If Emma’s track choice doesn’t make you chuckle when you hear it, there’s something seriously wrong with you…

And you also have a chance to win a pair of tickets to see Swans at the Cockpit, Leeds on Sunday 1st June. We want you to Tweet or Facebook us your pictures of swans using the hashtag #uptheswanny They can be any kind of picture and any kind of Swan! The deadline is midnight on Tuesday 20th May. And for inspiration, here’s a picture Emma drew. It documents a real-life situation where a giant swan attacked her girlfriend:

Buffet #32

Hello hello!

Hope you enjoyed our show.  After Jenny Jet got us pondering the metal gene, I’ve decided I do have it after all. And it sits quite comfortably with my love of Tijuana brass and disco.

And a little note for anyone intrigued by Lawrence of Denim, Felt, etc – a film has been made about him by Paul Kelly of Saint Etienne – Lawrence of Belgravia. http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2011/oct/20/lawrence-of-belgravia A must-see for anyone curious about one of music’s genuine eccentrics.

Here’s what we played!

Glastonbury 2010…..

tUnE-yArDs, the brainchild of the clearly unhinged but super-talented Merrill Garbus, opened my Glastonbury 2010 (Rolf Harris doing ‘Stairway To Heaven’ doesn’t count) on the West Holt Stage early on Friday afternoon, with a set of songs from debut album ‘Bird-Brains’. In contrast to the lo-fi sound of the album, recorded solely by Garbus using a sound recorder, a full band complete with 3 drummers, including Garbus herself, meant that the tribal energy of the songs broke through. Driven by a kind of afro-beat rhythm that builds and builds on top of Garbus’ distinctive chanting and yodelling, this all came together to form a sound that’s brilliantly smart and stupidly brilliant, exemplified in ‘Sunlight’.

Rivaling Liam Gallagher in terms of misplaced arrogance, Continue reading
