We have a dedicated Youth Development Worker, Dipak Mistry, who works with young people in the community and at the station to help young people create radio.
We also offer work placements to young people from schools, colleges, and training providers like the Prince’s Trust.
Our BCB Xtra strand of the schedule is dedicated to programmes made by young people and is on air every day at 6:30pm.
Our work with young people aims to build confidence, improve communication skills, prepare them for the world of work, and helps them to encounter people different to themselves.
Young people can come to the radio studio and learn the skills to broadcast. We generally work on the skills and knowledge required to work the studio equipment, the computer software, and how to put shows together.
Once you have the skills you will be able to produce pre-recorded shows for broadcast in our BCB Xtra slot, or in other parts of the broadcast schedule. You will also have opportunities to broadcast live, and to get involved in outside broadcasts.
If you are 18 or under, you must come for a visit to check us out, and we will need to ensure that your parent or guardian consents to you getting involved.
As with all of our work we work hard to make sure that our opportunities are available to young people that experience disadvantage.
