BCB celebrates International Women’s Day, Sunday 8th March

8th March is International Women’s Day and on BCB we broadcast Radio Venus – a full day of women’s broadcasting on BCB.

Join us and over 60 women reflecting on Bradford and the wonderful world we live in including Belle Vue girls, The Brickbox Ladies, Free2BeMe, Working Class Women, Speakers Corner, FGM, Bradford Fringe, Kirsty Taylor, Palestinian women for lots of diverse voices and lively discussion!

7.30-8am Radio Venus Angie Carrington, Shingai Mabhumbo, Julie Longden An oasis of fine female broadcasting, focusing on the inspirational Harriet Tubman.
8-9am Brickbox Breakfast Eleanor Barrett, Rosie Freeman Great sounds to start International Women’s Day on BCB with the lovely Brickbox Ladies.
9-11am Venus Late Late Breakfast Maria Spadafora, Ghazal Abassi Maria and Ghazal and welcome a myriad of wonderful Bradford women to discuss
• Being a local Councillor
• Innovative work with women on Canterbury Estate
• Julia Varley – Trade unionist, activist and Bradford Lass!
• Palestinian women’s solidarity visit to Bradford
11-12 noon Women’s Roundtable Maureen Grant Maureen chairs a review of the news from a women’s perspective and invites discussion with 3 guests; Noreen Akhtar, Catherine Simes and Angie Carrington.
12-1pm Echoes of Ireland Deidre Sheeran Deidre Sheeran presents Irish news and music with a female twist!
1-2pm Research Matters Gisela Helfing Gisela and colleagues discuss some of the research that women are conducting at Bradford University.
2-3pm A Class Act! Julie Longden Julie invites local women to discuss their lived experiences as working class women in Bradford.
3-5pm Women of the world Shamim Akhtar, Mercy Katola, Uzma Kazi, Ingrid Dzerins Join the Venus afternoon posse – Shamim, Mercy, Uzma, Ingrid and their guests discussing – (amongst other things)
• Mental health
• Women who stand up for change
• Latvian women
• Million Women Rise
5-5.30pm For Lyric – Motherhood and me Kirsty Taylor, Emma Fazakerly Kirsty Taylor talks to Emma Fazakerly about her personal story about the lines between motherhood and being a carer.
5.30-6pm Free 2 be Me Wendy Lewis, Shingai Mabhumbo Wendy and Shingai talk LGBTQ issues from a BAME perspective.
6-6.30pm Northern scene Liz Jenkins Liz Jenkins showcases local women musicians.
6.30-7pm BCB Xtra Noori Hussain BCB’s young talent, Noori Hussain presents IWD special.
7-8pm Bradford Spice Bindra Kaur Join Bindra and guests for her selection of banging Bhangra and Bollywood!
8-8.30pm Speakers Corner Sajidah and Mariyah Sajidah and Mariyah from Speakers Corner put the world to rights.
8.30-9pm In Conversation Mary Dowson Mary talks to Bradford’s FGM campaigner Yemi Fagbourun.
9-10pm Fringe benefits Sophie Powell Sophie from the Bradford Fringe previews what they have in store for 2020 and talks to people who are on the stand up circuit.
10-11pm One to One Carole Moss Carole Moss talks to Engobo Emeseh Head of the school of Law at Bradford university.
11pm-midnight Floor Fillers Mercy Katola Finish the day with Mercy’s white-hot sounds!

Thank you so much for taking part in out IWD broadcast at BCB on Sunday. It was a really good day with well over 60 women participating in the broadcast one way or another. Lots of diverse voices and lively discussion! What else would we expect?
