We’re not all that about rap here at Blowin – but we love the endless inventiveness of the sampling going on underneath. Here’s a well-stocked site and a labour of love – the 50 Greatest Hip-Hop Samples Of All Time.

You can listen to the 50 original tracks, and 50 tracks that used the samples.

 elWatusi

http://www.elwatusi.com/

elWatusi offers high quality, instantly downloadable MP3 files, no less than 320kbps, of the finest Latin, African and World music available.

“We see elWatusi’s role as a curatorial one, offering not every file available, but the ones that are, in our opinion, the most valuable musically and historically. We originally focused specifically on Afro-Latin music ranging from salsa and Afro-Cuban Latin jazz to rumba and folkloric lucumí/santeria. We now offer fine selections of African, Brazilian and world music as well. We specialize in hard to find material, from Cuba and elsewhere, and are always expanding our offerings.”

This week I have been mostly

  • rereading Martin Amis’ sort-of-memoir Experience, and seeing his books in new lights. http://januarymagazine.com/profiles/amis.html
  • listening to Lisa Robert’s shows on BCB, streaming at http://www.theothersideradio.com/ – and broadcast on BCB at midnight on Saturday - or 00.00 on Sunday as the schedule has it. Fresh.
  • seeing a deer in the woods, amidst the bluebells and not far from a main road, closest I’ve ever got to one, 20/30 yards away – I kept still, it looked right at me and didn’t see me – or didn’t see me as a threat.
  • watching the Fast Show in two minutes: www.youtube.com/watch?v=qraLCTgaS7s&feature=related
  • sitting in the sun listening to Exile On Main Street, Augustus Pablo’s Original Rockers compilation on Greensleeves, and Orchestre Baobab’s Gouye Gui de Dakar Vol 2 (where did I get that from? thanks to whoever).
  • watching the great Wolf lay it down – mesmerising – How Many More Years: www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Ou-6A3MKow

Blowin – 23 May

  • Neil Young – Over And Over – Ragged Glory CD – Reprise
  • Miles Davis – That’s Right – Decoy LP – Columbia
  • Salif Keita – Mandjou – The Mansa Of Mali: A Retrospective CD – Mango
  • John Cale & Terry Riley – Church Of Anthrax – Church Of Anthrax – Columbia
  • Burning Spear – Social Living extended mix – Social Living CD – Island
  • Orchestra Super Mazembe – Shauri Yako – Guitar Paradise Of East Africa CD – Earthworks

About Rob

Rob co-founded BCB with Mary Dowson, back when the hills were young and it were all flat caps an chappatis round 'ere. It was known as Bradford Festival Radio then, and thanks to the generosity of Dusty Rhodes we got started. Now he takes photos, puts little silver discs in drawers, mumbles into microphones, and walks on the hills. Keep On Blowin..
