About Rob

Rob co-founded BCB with Mary Dowson, back when the hills were young and it were all flat caps an chappatis round 'ere. It was known as Bradford Festival Radio then, and thanks to the generosity of Dusty Rhodes we got started. Now he takes photos, puts little silver discs in drawers, mumbles into microphones, and walks on the hills. Keep On Blowin..

Andy Kershaw returns to the radio this autumn.I always used to say that without John Peel BCB might not exist, but latterly it was Andy Kershaw who carried the musical swing, before his much publicised problems.

RIP Walter Witter. Walter came to this country from Jamaica in 1968. He died recently, aged 70.

Many Bradfordians knew him when he ran the Britannia Social Club on Carlisle Road (aka the Sugar Cane after Walter’s earlier club on Salt Street). In the days when pubs shut at 10.30 or 11pm the Sugar Cane was an after-hours refuge, and Walter and his wife Nellie were always friendly, with a real mix of customers.

Walter did some great paintings of Jamaican life and people, and some of them were on show at the the Sugar Cane. I coveted them badly, especially after a few Red Stripes. Latterly he ran the Devonshire Arms on Thornton Road. His son, Junior Witter, is well-known in the boxing world and won a World Championship some years ago.

Hope Road

Hope Road

This week I have mostly been..

  • anticipating the arrival of bottles of Saltaire Brewery’s new Triple Chocoholic beer, remarkable on draught – research continues
  • touring Manchester’s northern quarter with the Notorious Wig, encountering Shrek-a-likes and tasting something wonderful called Marble Decadence, an imperial stout, at the Marble Arch a pub with cunningly designed sloping floors… www.reluctantscooper.co.uk/2010/05/bottled-up-marble-decadence.html
  • crouching near the letterbox daily at post time, hoping for an advance copy of Sound System Scratch, a collection of previously unreleased Lee Perry dub plate mixes from the redoubtable Pressure Sounds – see www.pressure.co.uk/news/-/194/ – nothing so far…
