Sadhus at Shiva Ratree festival

Sadhus at Shiva Ratree festival

Photo and text by Irene Young
“Here are pics of the Shiva Ratree festival, where all the naga sadhu holy men took the bath to celebrate Shiva’s birthday in the Ganges river. There were 2 million in the crowds and catching any photographs at all was total madness. Not being a photographer was not allowed a pass, but managed to duck and dive and reach the bathing area, even though the place was full of police and special rapid action force. No one was allowed to take photos in the bathing area, but managed to sneak in behind the sadhus with the women who were to bathe afterwards.”
