Flaming Lips and Stardeath and White Dwarfs - The Dark Side Of The Moon

Flaming Lips and Stardeath and White Dwarfs - The Dark Side Of The Moon

After last week’s snowbound cancellation this week, When Big Joan Sets Up emerged from the frozen wastes of Kippax like a big emerging thing to bring you Oaklahoman psychedelic legends,The Flaming Lips‘ radical reinterpretation of Pink Floyd‘s 1973 gazillion selling opus, Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety.

This fact has led to me and Albert Freeman putting our not inconsiderable heads together to come up with other “classic” LPs that we’d like to see reinterpreted. Above the clamour of “haven’t you sad bastards got anything better to do?” (the answer to which is, he probably has, I definitely haven’t) we came up with the following:

A mix of classics and neglected gems from the dusty corners of the near faultless Warp records catalogue (we’re not going to mention Maximo Park as it’s Christmas and we’re in a good mood because we got gorilla slippers), alongside some of the banginest tunes from today’s new beat combos…

When Big Joan Sets Up 24/12 – A big fat man with a beard – how festive!

Santa Claus wears a Red Suit,
He must be a communist.
And a beard and long hair,
Must be a pacifist.
What’s in that pipe that he’s smoking?

Cheeky Beatle

Cheeky Beatle

And that rather grandiose Paul McCartney quote from the front cover of John and Yoko’s 1968 avant garde bonkersfest “Two Virgins” (although no one saw it because they were too busy looking at the staggeringly unattractive picture of them with their gear off that also adorns said LP – at least it wasn’t Ringo and Maureen, though) is my way of saying that we had a guest presenter in this week. The wonderful Laura Rawlings came to add some much needed DJ class to the programme, and was kind enough to bring some tunes in for us which feature amongst this lot. And everyone kept their clothes on. Thankfully.

Earache

Grind Madness at the BBC

Back to the formative days of grindcore on this week’s programme, with four shuddering blasts of apocalyptic noise  from Earache records epic 3 CD box set “Grind Madness at the BBC - The Earache Records Peel Sessions”  and also, by way of contrast, three tracks from Serious Sam Barratt’s excellent “Close to Home” LP on Ya Dig?. When Big Joan Sets Up is BCB’s dirty little secret tucked away on Wednesday nights at midnight like a mad relative trapped in the attic in a 1970’s horror film.  If you, humble blog reader, decide to join the happy band of insomniacs, skiving security guards and burglars that comprise our listenership, you can sample delightful new music in a bewildering variety of genres and one or two old songs as well.

This week’s cavalcade of innocent  fun featured the new tunes from Asobi Seksu, Skream and Wet Hair along with four tracks from the new Topic Records box set.   Tracklist looks like this: Continue reading
