Wilful Missing on the show – Wed 2nd Feb

Hello you,

I’m organised for once (albeit for about two minutes) which means I’ve sorted the songs and typed the words…hooray! I’ve assembled my favourite songs of this week including a beautiful number plucked from the session archives and something from my christmas presents. I’m also not alone on the show because Wilful Missing (who are this week’s featured band) have very kindly lent me one of their band members to chat to…the famous Albert Freeman.

If you’d like to get a sneak preview of what’s in store with Wilful Missing then take a look and a listen to www.wilfulmissing.co.uk ….perhaps even copper up afterwards and buy their EP. I think they’d prefer you to ‘pound coin it up big stylee’ but that sounds a bit odd.

Here’s what’s playing on Wed 26th Jan:
Everything Everything – Photoshop handsome
Fujiya & Miyagi – Taiwanese boots
Ann Drury (BCB Session track from the archives) – Loving you (Ann’s a very lovely, very talented lady from Keighley…myspace.com/anndrury)
Wilful Missing interview – with Albert Freeman
Wilful Missing – Comfort in strangers (from the Loose Ends EP – I love this song. The key, the lyrics and the atmosphere….my favourite WM song).
Appliance – Ursa major
Laetitia Sadier – One million year trip
Yuck – Georgia
Wilful Missing – Night parachuting (from the Vast Atlantic EP)
Make Out – I don’t want anybody that wants me
Tapestry – Misplaced trust (recorded for The BCB Sessions)
Arab Strap – Blood (from Madator at 21 box set)
Acid Washed – Rain
Wilful Missing – Postcode lottery (from the Vast Atlantic EP. WM are playing live at the Basement Bar in York on 5th Feb so try somewhere new and head up the A64 or whatever road leads to York).

Next week we’ve got Alt Track on the show! I saw them playing at a wedding (Congratulations Lorna – she presents ‘From here’  on BCB)…and they caught my attention – even with the pull of wedding dancing to ‘Voulez Vous’ in the cellar bar of the Bradford Playhouse. Obviously I’d had a few Lambrinis.

Moving swiftly on…if you’d like to get your music on the show or you want to plug a gig – get in touch: laura.rawlings@bcbradio.co.uk

Good music, sad news

Evening all,

Hope your week’s going well….on the show we’ve got the fantastic Scars on 45! Playing three acoustic tracks and having a chat. They’re playing their new single so if you like it and want to bag it for yourself go to:
www.scarson45.com

One major dark cloud’s been hanging over me (well, more than one but we’ll stick to the musical point…) – the really sad news of Trish Keenan passing away. I’ve loved Broadcast from the moment I first heard their music and have since collected all their releases – one of the very few bands in that category. Their sound was quite different to everything I’d previously enjoyed.  I have many happy memories of dancing along in the kitchen to tracks from ‘The Book Lovers’ and ‘Extended Play’ and being mesmorised by the band at a gig in Birmingham.  Trish honestly inspired me – to the point where I briefly plucked up courage to sing in my own band. I’ll miss her dearly.

Cue the music….on Wed 19th Jan:

Cloud Nothing – Understand at all
Patrick Wolf – Time of my life (ceephax remix) (no, not the dirty dancing song!)
Mona – Listen to your love
Scars on 45 (BCB Session) – interview with Danny, Nova and Amy
Scars on 45 (BCB Session) – Hearts on fire
Soom T – Jungle of peace
Clinic – Bubblegum
McD – Lipburna (Big up for Bradford – making instrumental tunes)
Austra – Beat and the pulse
Scars on 45 (BCB Session) – Beauty’s running wild
Printed Circuit – Brick it (I love Printed Circuit from Leeds http://printed-circuit.net/…pledge some dosh and help get more releases from this great band)
Broadcast – According to no plan
Beat Connection – Space vacation
Former Ghosts – New Orleans
Scars on 45 (BCB Session) – Give me something

Thanks for reading/listening….the show’s on from 9pm, Wednesday on 106.6fm (in Bradford) or www.bcbradio.co.uk (live online).

Get in touch if you’re in a band/you’re an artist with music you’d like me to play: laura.rawlings@bcbradio.co.uk – we love to hear from you!

The BCB Sessions (12 Jan) – music from Ellen and the Escapades, Chromeo & MIA.

Well hello there…

How have you been? Hope all’s good…and you’ve either managed to wean yourself off the quality streets (or you’ve eaten all the good ones).

Onto musical matters….I’ve put together a grand selection for the show. Here’s what’s making me a happy bunny:

Chromeo – Hot mess (duck sauce remix)
Smoke Fairies – Strange moon rising (playing at the Brudenell Social at the end of Jan)
Pete and the Pirates – Winter 1
Ellen and the Escapades – Preying on your mind (join their mailing list and download a free acoustic version of Without You)
John Grant – Where dreams go to do
MIA – Internet connection (Huoratron rum aix remix)
Starling – Be Someone (lovely, from Bradford…myspace.com/starlingsings)
The Walkmen – Juveniles
Hercules & Love Affair – Fax yourself, ‘sunshine’ (one of my christmas pressies)
Esben & the Witch – Warpath (in Shef on 7 Feb)
Wilful Missing – Ghosts (Loose Ends EP out now, playing York on 5 Feb)
Arcade Fire – We used to wait
Darren Hayman (sung by Elizabeth Morris) – I know I fucked up (he’s doing a song a day to keep the winter misery away…look him up on soundcloud and you can download a track for free). Woo!

Every week there’s nothing I love more (well almost!) than discovering new songs and recording sessions. This is especially true when it comes to local talent – strictly of the musical variety. Thanks for sending in tunes and gigs dates – keep em coming. You’re lovely. You can either email: laura.rawlings@bcbradio.co.uk or post: Laura Rawlings, The BCB Sessions, 11 Rawson Road, Bradford BD1 3SH.

If I think it’ll tickle our collective fancy, I’ll get it on the show and you’ll join The BCB Sessions’ “Hall of Fame” alongside Blue Roses, Freyed Knot, The Luminaries, Lone Wolf, The Duke & the King, King Creosote….and hundreds more.

I’ll be back next week with Scars on 45…they’ve got new material so we’ll be playing it – Wednesday night at 9pm. If you want a sneak preview of their sound, www.scarson45.com

Ooh the weather outside is frightful but never worry never fear – The BCB Sessions it is here!

The BCB Sessions – 1 Dec 2010

Far be it from me to harp on about the weather (not very showbiz) but we’ve all got giddy with it. Loads of snow = six hours before the show,  stranded in London, scrambling to get on a train, thinking this must have been what Lord of the Flies was like…. Anyway the chance of trudging through the white stuff to get my record bag and meticulously selected songs was a big fat zero. On the upside, three hours on a train gave me plenty of time to find weather related (or tenuously connected) tunes on the ipod…and lovingly put together a show for you.

The cherry on the snowy icing is the session from Les Shelleys (FatCat Records). Thanks to Albert Freeman for pressing the record button and adding some extra sparkle. The result’s gorgeous. Three fab covers…

Miike Snow – Black and blue

Fujiya & Miyagi – 16 Shades of black and blue

Stereolab – Come and play in the milky night

Fists – Finger (from a Tip Toe Records compilation. Leeds based label with lovelies like Fran Rodgers, Buen Chico and Insect Guide)

Les Shelleys – Late John Garfield blues, written by John Prine

Ed Harcourt – In the bleak midwinter

Peppermint Lounge – Snow falls down (session track from the archive. Love these guys, hear more of them at mypsace.com/thepeppermintlounge).

Mercury Rev – Snowflake in a hot world

Les Shelleys (BCB Session) – I’m on fire, written by Bruce Springsteeen, originally on his Born in the USA album.

Belle and Sebastian – Write about love (well..it’s one way to keep warm on a cold night)

Fleet Foxes – White winter hymnal

Northern Introvert – Breakdown (Producer/DJ from Bradford…Secret Symbols EP out on Dec 6th)

Neon Indian – Terminally chill

Les Shelleys (BCB Session) – Deep Purple, written by Peter DeRose (1920s tune)

I’m back on Wednesday night at 9pm – 106.6fm in Bradford / www.bcbradio.co.uk online. Whatever the weather the show must go on (my stiff upper lip is actually frozen) and our session comes from Gregory and the Hawk, who’ve been touring with Les Shelleys.

Don’t forget to keep the postie busy and send in any songs you’d like me to play on the radio: Laura Rawlings, The BCB Sessions, 11 Rawson Road, Bradford BD1 1NE. Or if you’d like to come and do a session, email me: laura.rawlings@bcbradio.co.uk

Until Wednesday.
