Bradford Science Festival is a week of surprising science and fascinating fun at the Science and Media Museum and online.

As part of the Bradford Science Festival 2020 BCB Radio will host a series of special radio shows throughout the week, including interviews and discussions on the topic of women in STEM.

Benjamin and Micah, our 9 year old BCB Xtra presenters, bring you an exciting and educational electricity themed half hour with facts, songs, jokes and maybe a riddle if you’re lucky!

Monday 26th October 2020

The Climate Press presents: Climate Strike – 10am

Tom Wood from the Climate Press talks to people attending local climate strikes and discusses how collective action has proven invaluable in recent times. He also finds out about Bradford Council’s response to the climate emergency.

Andy is the STEM Ambassador Hub Manager at the Museum, he’s been working to raise the profile of black scientists in schools through the BAME forum he set up and he is also on the Diversity Panel for the Science Museum Group.

17.35 – Kathryn Halstead PPG – Part 1 Sustainability

Presenter – Kathy Dyson

PPG is the Lead sponsor of the Festival. Throughout the week we are speaking with several members of staff at PPG about careers in STEM industries. Kathryn will be talking about her career and Sustainability & the Environment at PPG

Reader in Mechanical and Process Engineering at the University of Bradford Elaine Brown, tells us about careers in Engineering.

17.35 – Kathryn Halstead PPG – Part 2 Gender Diversity

Presenter – Kathy Dyson

Kathryn tells us about her role as leader of UK Women’s Leadership Network at PPG, and why Diversity is so important at PPG

11.35 – Gary Smith PPG – STEM Careers

Presenter – Helen Seymour

Gary works for PPG as a Business Excellence Manager in Aerospace. Find out about his career in science and his current role.

17.35 – Heather Millard & Elizabeth Labres – Environment/ Recycling

Heather and Lizzie are going to talk about Recycling related to museum collections (linking to the BSF theme of Sustainability)

11.35 – Donna Matthews PPG – STEM Careers

Presenter – Shamim Akhtar

Donna will be telling us about her work as a Quality Control Chemist for PPG, what this means and how she started in her career in science.

17.35 – Viktor Doychinov – Stem Careers (and Pipebots!)

Presenter – John Hebden

Viktor will be telling us about his career in wireless communications; 5G in general, wireless technology in medical devices, applications to robotics and VR. And also discussing his current project, called Pipebots which is about making small robots that will inspect and repair water and sewer pipes from the inside.

11.35 – Sarah Ledjmi – Bradlab, Research into the collections at NSMM

Sarah will talk about the research into the collection that volunteers have been doing, and some of the exciting things they have discovered!
